Since 2018, the call for graded reading anthologies has become more prominent due to the cost of printing individual readers. This also ameliorates the complex management and storage problems associated with numerous levelled readers, especially in crowded classrooms with large learner contingents.
The individual Vula Bula graded readers are therefore available in an anthology format in all nine African languages, following the same scope and sequence as the original series.
Teachers should make the stories as exciting as possible by reading aloud with expression, varying inflection, tone, pitch and pace, and using different voices for different characters. Teachers should also use the full colour illustrations to create a shared reading experience that develops learners visual literacy and interpretation skills, prediction and inferential skills, and critical and creative thinking skills.
GRADE 1: 16
stories (1-star, 2-star & 3-star readers)
GRADE 2: 16
stories (3-star, 4-star & 5-star readers)
GRADE 3: TERMS
1+2: 16 stories, TERMS 3+4: 16

It is recommended that a classroom is equipped with enough anthologies for each learner to receive a copy. The anthologies can be managed as a re-usable resource, used in conjunction with a learner accession register.
